Every maritime, dredging, or offshore project requires preparatory survey investigation. Throughout the project's lifecycle, including post-completion, the team performs regular measurements (hydrographic, topographic, etc.) using modern equipment. This detailed mapping and monitoring are crucial, as measurement is knowledge.

## Responsibilities
- **Set-up of Survey Activities**: At the project's start, install equipment such as sounding equipment, tide gauges, and positioning system equipment.
- **Determination of Sounding Method**: Choose the most suitable sounding method for the project.
- **Performance of Measurements**: Conduct accurate measurements as required.
- **Volume Calculation**: Calculate dredged volumes for reporting, invoicing, etc.
- **Map Creation**: Draw maps using specialized software.
- **Maintenance and Calibration**: Maintain and calibrate various 'high-tech' systems.
- **Problem-Solving and Communication**: Act as a contact person for issues regarding positioning systems on board vessels.

# Call for Master's Thesis FS 2025

In collaboration with Manukai, the Chair of Production and Operations Management offers a master's thesis for the spring semester 2025.

Manukai, a spin-off from ETH Zurich, develops novel AI technologies to automate the programming of CNC machines for companies in the machinery, automotive, aerospace, watchmaking, and medical technology industries.

## Project Description
Manukai employs machine learning methods to identify machining features in 3D geometries. The identified features can be classified, which is relevant for downstream task automation, such as programming CNC machines.

The project consists of two main components:
- **Improvement of the current ML pipeline:** including information extraction from STEP files, ML architecture design, training, and computational performance optimization.
- **Evaluation of potential operational efficiency gains:** from the implemented procedure, along with a discussion of opportunities and challenges for implementation in real product development settings. This evaluation can be performed using either a real-world company scenario or a realistic case study.

## Requirements
- Knowledge of deep learning methods.
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Basic knowledge of Linux.
- Proactive problem-solving: the student anticipates challenges and uses critical thinking and creativity to overcome obstacles.

## Organization
The project will be supervised by Dr. Daniel Wälchli at the Chair of Production and Operations Management.  
The project duration is 6 months, and a workplace will be provided at Scheuchzerstrasse 7 during the project runtime. The student will also obtain access to Manukai's development infrastructure (server and code). We are flexible in choosing a start date, ideally in FS 2025.

# Embedded Systems & FPGA Ingenieur/in (Befristete Stelle)

## Überblick  
Im **EPM Lab** entwickeln wir **SpiNaCH (Spinning Natrium in Confoederatio Helvetica)**, um zu untersuchen, wie Rotation und Magnetfelder leitfähige Flüssigkeiten beeinflussen – ein wichtiger Aspekt zum Verständnis planetarer Magnetfelder. Unser Datenerfassungssystem nutzt ein **Zynq Ultrascale FPGA** und **24 STM32 MCUs**, um mit **192 Hall-Effekt-Sensoren** zu interagieren.  

Wir suchen eine/n **Embedded Systems & FPGA Ingenieur/in**, um unsere **ADC PCB-Module zu überarbeiten** und das System optimal am Laufen zu halten. Wenn du gerne Hardware- und Firmware-Probleme löst, bist du bei uns richtig.

## Hauptaufgabe: Neugestaltung der ADC PCB-Module

# Embedded Systems & FPGA Engineer (Temporary Position)

## Overview  
At the EPM Lab, we’re building **SpiNaCH (Spinning Natrium in Confoederatio Helvetica)** to study how rotation and magnetic fields affect conductive fluids—a key to understanding planetary magnetic fields. Our data acquisition platform uses a **Zynq Ultrascale FPGA** and **24 STM32 MCUs** to interface with **192 Hall effect sensors**.  

We need an **Embedded Systems & FPGA Engineer** to **redesign our ADC PCB modules** and keep this system running well. If you like solving hardware and firmware problems, we want you on our team.

## Primary Task: ADC PCB Redesign  
- **Check Current Boards:** Look for ways to improve the design and plan new layouts.  
- **Build & Test:** Create prototypes and ensure they meet performance needs.  
- **Connect to FPGA:** Make sure the redesigned boards work smoothly with the FPGA system.  

## Key Responsibilities  
- **SoC FPGA Development:** Work with **Vivado and Vitis** to maintain firmware.

Die **SAR Remote Sensing Technology Group** am Lehrstuhl für Erdbeobachtung und Fernerkundung, Department Bau-, Umwelt- und Geomatikingenieurwesen, **ETH Zürich**, Schweiz, lädt Bewerbungen für eine **Doktorandenstelle** (100%, voll finanziert, für 4 Jahre) in einem Forschungsprojekt zur **UAV-basierten Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Fernerkundung** ab **Frühjahr 2025** ein.

## Stellenbeschreibung

Sie werden Teil eines innovativen, hochmotivierten internationalen Forschungsteams sein, das fortschrittliche SAR-Bildgebungsalgorithmen und geo-/biophysikalische Parameterableitungsmethoden untersucht, die für zukünftige Satelliten-SAR-Fernerkundungskonzepte relevant sind. Abgeleitete Anwendungen umfassen, sind aber nicht beschränkt auf:

- 3D-Vegetationsstruktur/Biomasse-Erfassung
- Messung von Bodenbewegungen (Erdrutsche, Senkungen) unter Verwendung von monostatischem und bistatischem SAR

Ihre Forschung wird Folgendes umfassen:

1. Untersuchung, Entwicklung und Implementierung fortschrittlicher SAR-Bildgebungs-/Signalverarbeitungsalgorithmen und geo-/biophysikalischer Parameterableitungsmethoden für verschiedene SAR-Sensorkonstellationen und Datenaufnahmemodi (z.B. Multi-Baseline-SAR-Interferometrie, SAR-Tomographie, bistatisches SAR)
2. Demonstration und Validierung dieser neuen Methoden durch SAR-Fernerkundungsexperimente unter Verwendung modernster kompakter frequenzmodulierter Dauerstrichradarinstrumentierung und GNSS-unterstützter Inertialnavigation integriert auf einem Multicopter-UAV.

Das Forschungsprojekt bietet eine hervorragende Gelegenheit, eine Forschungskarriere im wachsenden Bereich der SAR-Fernerkundung zu beginnen, mit Zugang zu umfangreicher Expertise in den Bereichen SAR-Bildgebung von agilen Plattformen (UAVs, Automobile), Flugzeugen und Satelliten sowie Radarinstrumentierung und Navigation. Sie werden Ihre Forschungsergebnisse in von Experten begutachteten Fachzeitschriften veröffentlichen und auf internationalen Konferenzen präsentieren.

## Profil

**Erforderliche Qualifikationen:**

- Hervorragender Master-Abschluss (MSc) in Elektrotechnik/Nachrichtentechnik, Geomatik-Ingenieurwesen, Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik, Geodäsie, Geophysik, Physik, Informatik oder einem verwandten Bereich, mit Hintergrund in digitaler Signalverarbeitung und/oder Bildverarbeitung.
- Starke analytische und Umsetzungskompetenzen mit:
  - solider Grundlage in Mathematik, Physik, Datenanalyse und
  - starken Programmierfähigkeiten (Python, Matlab, C/C++ oder Äquivalent).
- Fähigkeit und Bereitschaft, SAR-Signalverarbeitungsalgorithmen in einer solchen Programmiersprache zu entwickeln und zu implementieren.
- Unabhängige, kreative und lösungsorientierte Arbeitsweise, geprägt von Neugier und Innovationsdrang.

# PhD Student Position in UAV-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar Remote Sensing

**100%, Zurich, fixed-term**

## Overview

The **SAR Remote Sensing Technology Group** at the Chair of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering, **ETH Zurich**, Switzerland, is inviting applications for a **PhD student opportunity** (100%, fully funded, for 4 years) within a research project on **UAV-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing** starting in **spring 2025**.

## Job Description

You will join an innovative, highly motivated international research team to investigate advanced SAR imaging algorithms and geo-/biophysical parameter retrieval approaches relevant for future satellite SAR remote sensing concepts. Derived applications include, but are not limited to:

- 3-D vegetation structure/biomass retrieval
- Measurement of ground motion (landslides, subsidence) using monostatic and bistatic SAR

Your research will involve:

1. Investigating, developing, and implementing advanced SAR imaging/signal processing algorithms and geo-/biophysical parameter retrieval methods for different SAR sensor constellations and data acquisition modes (e.g., multi-baseline SAR interferometry, SAR tomography, bistatic SAR)
2. Demonstrating and validating these new methods with SAR remote sensing experiments using state-of-the-art compact frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar instrumentation and GNSS-aided inertial navigation integrated on a multicopter UAV.

The research project provides an excellent opportunity to start a research career in the growing domain of SAR remote sensing, with access to extensive expertise in areas such as SAR imaging from agile platforms (UAVs, automobiles), aircraft, satellites, radar instrumentation, and navigation. You will publish your research results in peer-reviewed journal articles and present them at international conferences.

## Profile

**Required qualifications:**

- Outstanding Master’s degree (MSc) in electrical/telecommunications engineering, geomatics engineering, aerospace engineering, geodesy, geophysics, physics, computer science, or a related field, with a background in digital signal processing and/or image processing.
- Strong analytical and implementation skills with:
  - A good foundation in mathematics, physics, data analysis, and
  - Strong programming skills (Python, Matlab, C/C++, or equivalent).
- Capable/keen to develop and implement SAR signal-processing algorithms in such a programming language.
- Independent, creative, and solution-oriented way of working, characterized by curiosity and a drive for innovation.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to adapt to new technologies and research questions.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Excellent English skills (oral and written).
- Hands-on attitude towards technology and radar experiments in the field, including:
  - Willingness to obtain a drone pilot certificate A1/A3 and to pilot a multicopter drone for UAV-based SAR experiments.
- A valid driver’s license (European Cat. B) - required to conduct UAV-based SAR experiments in the field.

**The following additional qualifications are advantageous:**

- Previous experience in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) signal processing or another field of array signal processing.
- Previous experience/hands-on with radar instrumentation.
- (Basic) knowledge of German.
- A flair for scientific writing.
